5 Facts About the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary Program

Published by Hailey Ploski

The Qualified Medicare Beneficiary Program (QMB) program benefits over 7.7 million Americans every year, but do you fully understand what it is? The QMB program helps people who are also enrolled in Medicaid and need help covering their Medicare insurance premiums. Here’s what everyone should know about the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary program.

5 Interesting Facts About the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary Program

The QMB program can cover the costs of Medicare Part A premiums, Medicare Part B premiums, deductibles, coinsurance for any Medicare program services, Medicare Part D premiums and a percentage of Medicare insurance drug costs. This program, if you are eligible, is a phenomenal way to reduce the amount that you are paying for healthcare.

People who are eligible to enroll in the QMB program must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and have limited assets or financial resources. The QMB program is different from Medicaid. Medicaid is designed to pay for services that are not typically covered by traditional Medicare plans. QMB is known as “partial Medicaid,” and it pays for services that are already covered by the Medicare program. For example, dental and vision services are not typically covered by Medicare insurance. Consequently, QMB also does not cover those services.

If you are enrolled in the QMB program, you must bring both your Medicare program card and your Qualified Medicare Beneficiary card with you to the doctor. Always ensure that your doctor knows that you participate in both programs, as Medicare insurance providers are not allowed to bill you for services and items that the Medicare program covers as a result of your participating in the QMB program.

The current individual monthly income limit for the QMB program is $1,061. The limit for a married couple is $1,430. The individual resource limit is currently $7,730 and the married couple resource limit is $11,600.
